This is my first book. I mainly use the Shanghai middle school mathematics curriculum to reveal how Chinese students develop a growth mindset through deep, critical, and thorough thinking in algebra. Four types of equations are covered, linear, quadratic, rational, and radical equations as well as two systems, linear and quadratic. The advantage of Shanghai mathematics education lies in developing students’ strong algebraic skills and logical reasoning abilities. In addition to these advantages, the book also integrates four other features:
- Visualization: discover the true meaning of equations and solutions to systems, e.g., the formation of extraneous solutions.
- Easy-to-challenge word problems involving pure mathematics, real-life situations, and interdisciplinary application.
- Connect to advanced mathematics, for example, solving linear systems using Gauss-Jordan elimination to broaden students’ horizons.
- Open-ended Exploration: “low-floor high-ceiling” applications of the equations for students of all levels.
